Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an umbrella disorder, affecting 1 out of every 68 kids in developed countries; appear to be on the rise. Autism is a complex neurodegenerative disorder leading to a traumatic impact nervous system and normal functional attributes of brain. The autism is characterized by affected cognitive, emotional and socio-physical health of the child.
It has been evidently observed that ASD generally hits on the three different elements of a child’s life:
- Social Behavior
- Communication and Adaptive Interaction
- Interests and Association
Earlier, it has been thought as a defect observed since birth; however, some kids suddenly develop lack of interest in being social or interactive.
Parents are the first one, who can actually notice changes in their child’s behavior; however it is also quite possible that some behavioral issues are ignored, by downplaying them as “just a phase”! However with increasing number of autism cases in developed countries; doctors and experts can promptly evaluate a possibility of Autism Spectrum Disorder.
According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and American Psychiatric Association, the three leading types of ASD reportedly exhibiting highest prevalence are:
- Asperger’s Syndrome
- Pervasive Developmental Disorder
- Autistic Disorder
Apart from the three listed above, other two less prevalent forms known to be Rett Syndrome & Childhood Disintegrative Disorder; have also been marked with significant popularity.
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD, similar to hyperkinetic disorder in the ICD-10) is a psychiatric disorder of the neuro developmental type in which there are significant problems of attention, hyperactivity, or acting impulsively that are not appropriate for a person’s age.
These symptoms must begin by age six to twelve and persist for more than six months for a diagnosis to be made. In school-aged individuals inattention symptoms often result in poor school performance.
